Why in News?

India is hosting the World Circular Economy Forum (WCEF) 2026 in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, from 15–18 September 2026.

This is the first time WCEF is being hosted in South Asia.

Theme: “Circular Economy: Transition for People and Prosperity”

What is a Circular Economy?

A circular economy is an economic model that aims to keep products and materials in use for as long as possible through:

• Reuse

• Repair

• Refurbishment

• Recycling

• Recovery of valuable materials

It seeks to reduce waste, resource consumption and environmental damage, unlike the traditional “take–make–dispose” model.

• Participants: 2,000+ stakeholders from 65+ countries

• Exhibition: 125+ national and international exhibitors

• Focus on circular finance, innovation, digitalisation and technology.

Who is Organising WCEF 2026?

The forum is jointly organised by:

• Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), India

• Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC)

• Government of Finland

10-Year Framework of Programmes (10YFP):

Alongside WCEF, the Board of the 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns (10YFP) will hold its in-person meeting in Gandhinagar.

India has recently assumed the role of Co-Chair of the 10YFP Board.

10YFP: An international framework aimed at promoting sustainable consumption and production (SCP) patterns.

भारत 15–18 सितंबर 2026 तक गांधीनगर, गुजरात में विश्व परिपत्र अर्थव्यवस्था मंच (World Circular Economy Forum – WCEF) 2026 की मेजबानी कर रहा है।

यह दक्षिण एशिया में पहली बार WCEF की मेजबानी है।

परिपत्र अर्थव्यवस्था क्या है?

परिपत्र अर्थव्यवस्था (Circular Economy) एक ऐसी आर्थिक व्यवस्था है, जिसमें उत्पादों और संसाधनों को यथासंभव लंबे समय तक उपयोग में बनाए रखा जाता है। इसमें मुख्य रूप से शामिल हैं:

• पुनः उपयोग (Reuse)

• मरम्मत (Repair)

• नवीनीकरण (Refurbishment)

• पुनर्चक्रण (Recycling)

• मूल्यवान संसाधनों की पुनर्प्राप्ति (Recovery)

इसका उद्देश्य अपशिष्ट, संसाधनों की खपत और पर्यावरणीय क्षति को कम करना है। यह पारंपरिक “लेना–बनाना–फेंकना (Take–Make–Dispose)” मॉडल से अलग है।

WCEF के साथ सतत उपभोग एवं उत्पादन प्रतिरूपों पर 10-वर्षीय कार्यक्रम (10-Year Framework of Programmes – 10YFP) के बोर्ड की बैठक भी गांधीनगर में आयोजित होगी।

भारत ने हाल ही में 10YFP बोर्ड के सह-अध्यक्ष (Co-Chair) की भूमिका संभाली है।

10YFP: यह एक अंतरराष्ट्रीय ढाँचा है, जिसका उद्देश्य सतत उपभोग एवं उत्पादन (Sustainable Consumption and Production – SCP) प्रतिरूपों को बढ़ावा देना है।
