Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh recently hailed the indigenous “Project Kusha” air defence system as a transformative asset for India’s security. During the inauguration of the Advanced Weapon System Complex at the Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) in Hyderabad, he described the project as a “game-changer” that will provide an impenetrable protective umbrella for the nation.
What is Project Kusha: It is an indigenous, long-range Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) defence system being developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). It is designed to be a peer competitor to world-class systems like Russia’s S-400.
Technical Capability: The system features three distinct interceptor variants with ranges of 150 km, 250 km, and 400 km. This multi-layered configuration provides a comprehensive shield against diverse aerial threats, including:
Stealth aircraft
Drones and UAVs
Cruise missiles
Hypersonic and ballistic weapons

Battlefield Proven: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh confirmed that the system’s effectiveness has already been verified during “Operation Sindoor,” a 2025 tri-services military campaign launched in response to a terror attack in Pahalgam. He noted that the system successfully provided a protective shield for the entire region during that period.
Collaborative Ecosystem: The project is a testament to the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (Self-reliant India) model. It involves deep integration between DRDO laboratories, Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), private industries, MSMEs, and academic institutions.
Strategic Doctrine: The Defence Minister emphasized that in an era of global turmoil and shifting international alliances, India must rely on two pillars:
Resilience: The ability to absorb shocks and remain functional during a crisis.
Deterrence: The capability to instill fear in potential aggressors, ensuring they understand the heavy cost of hostile intentions.
Operational Timeline: The Project Kusha system is slated for full-scale operational deployment between 2028 and 2030.
Project Kusha represents a critical shift in India’s defence posture. By moving away from reliance on imported defence technology, India is securing its borders with indigenous innovation that is specifically tailored to the unique terrain and geopolitical threats of the Indian subcontinent. The Defence Minister’s comparison of the system to the mythological Govardhan Hill highlights the government’s view of this technology as a divine-like protector of the nation’s security.
