What is Microbe-based Farming?

Microbe-based Farming:

Microbe-based farming (or bio-farming) focuses on using living microorganisms to enhance soil fertility and plant growth, reducing the heavy reliance on chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

How it Works (The Mechanism):

  1. Bio-fertilization: These microbes fix atmospheric nitrogen and solubilize phosphorus and potassium, making these essential nutrients available to the plant in a form it can absorb.
  2. Biostimulation: They produce growth hormones (like auxins and gibberellins) that trigger root expansion and faster plant development.
  3. Biocontrol (Natural Pesticide): Bacillus subtilis acts as a natural shield. It produces antibiotics and lipopeptides that kill harmful soil-borne pathogens (fungi and bacteria).

Advantages of the “State Microbe” Initiative:

The article highlights that this initiative is a bridge between Science, Policy, and Society.

  • Ecological Self-Reliance: By promoting localized, microbe-based solutions, farmers can lower input costs and improve “Soil Health,” which has been declining due to chemical over-exploitation.
  • Scientific Temper: Declaring a microbe as a state symbol helps demystify “germs.” It teaches the public that most microbes are essential for life, digestion, and the environment, rather than just causes of disease.
  • Sustainable Waste Management: These microbes can decompose organic waste efficiently, offering cheap and local solutions for waste and water treatment.

Policy:

Theme Relation to Bacillus subtilis & Bio-farming
Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana Supports organic farming and the use of bio-fertilizers.
National Mission on Sustainable Agriculture Focuses on climate-resilient farming using biological tools.
Atmanirbhar Bharat Reducing the import of expensive chemical fertilizers (like Urea/DAP) through indigenous bio-solutions.
Conservation of Biodiversity Recognizing the “Invisible Biodiversity” as a vital state asset.
