Why in news?

Assam has become the first state in India to commercially produce Matcha tea, with production commencing at the Chota Tingrai Tea Estate in eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district.

The first commercially produced batch of Matcha tea was sold at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre for Rs 3,000, reflecting encouraging market interest in the premium product.

What is Matcha Tea?

• Matcha is a finely ground green tea powder made from specially processed, shade-grown tea leaves. The shade-growing process gives matcha its characteristic bright green colour and rich umami flavour. It is typically prepared by whisking the powder into hot water.
• Matcha originated through cultural exchanges between China and Japan during the premodern period. It developed from earlier powdered tea practices in China that were later introduced to Japan by Zen Buddhist monks.
• Sarma said the introduction of commercial matcha production is expected to strengthen the global reputation of the Assam tea brand while creating new opportunities for tea growers and producers.

Major Indian Tea Varieties by Region

• Assam Tea (Assam): Known for being the boldest, most robust Indian tea. It has a rich, malty flavor and deep red-amber color, making it the preferred base for strong milk teas and masala chai.
• Darjeeling Tea (West Bengal): Often called the “Champagne of Teas,” this high-altitude tea is famous for its delicate, complex, and floral notes (often described as “muscatel”). It is typically produced as orthodox black, green, white, or oolong tea.
• Nilgiri Tea (Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka): Grown in the “Blue Mountains” of South India, these teas are known for being bright, brisk, and aromatic. They are well-balanced and popular for both hot and iced tea.
• Kangra Tea (Himachal Pradesh): Grown in the foothills of the Himalayas, this tea is known for its light, delicate flavor profile with a sweet, lingering aftertaste.
• Sikkim Tea (Sikkim): Produced primarily at the Temi Tea Estate, this is a premium, organic tea known for its smooth, bright, and slightly floral characteristics.
• Tripura Tea (Tripura): Often bold and strong, similar in character to Assam tea, and increasingly focused on organic production.

माचा (Matcha) चाय:

असम भारत का पहला राज्य बन गया है जहाँ व्यावसायिक रूप से माचा चाय का उत्पादन किया जा रहा है। इसकी शुरुआत पूर्वी असम के तिनसुकिया जिले में स्थित ‘छोटा तिंगराई टी एस्टेट’ (Chota Tingrai Tea Estate) से हुई है।

व्यावसायिक रूप से उत्पादित माचा चाय की पहली खेप गुवाहाटी टी ऑक्शन सेंटर (नीलामी केंद्र) में 3,000 रुपये में बिकी, जो इस प्रीमियम उत्पाद में बाजार की उत्साहजनक रुचि को दर्शाता है।

माचा चाय क्या है?

• माचा एक बारीक पिसा हुआ ग्रीन टी पाउडर है, जिसे विशेष रूप से संसाधित (processed) और छाया में उगाई गई चाय की पत्तियों से बनाया जाता है। छाया में उगाने की प्रक्रिया ही माचा को उसका विशिष्ट चमकीला हरा रंग और समृद्ध ‘उमामी’ (umami) स्वाद प्रदान करती है। इसे आमतौर पर पाउडर को गर्म पानी में फेंटकर (whisking) तैयार किया जाता है।

• माचा की उत्पत्ति चीन और जापान के बीच पूर्व-आधुनिक काल में हुए सांस्कृतिक आदान-प्रदान से हुई। यह चीन में पाउडर वाली चाय की शुरुआती प्रथाओं से विकसित हुआ, जिसे बाद में ज़ेन बौद्ध भिक्षुओं द्वारा जापान में पेश किया गया।

• शर्मा ने कहा कि व्यावसायिक माचा उत्पादन की शुरुआत से असम चाय ब्रांड की वैश्विक प्रतिष्ठा मजबूत होने की उम्मीद है, साथ ही यह चाय उत्पादकों के लिए नए अवसर पैदा करेगा।
