Recently, U.S. president Donald Trump, senior U.S. officials, and the media have embraced “G2” to refer to a proposed “Group of Two” world order dominated by the United States and China as the preeminent world superpowers.
Context and Implications
• Political/Geoeconomic: G2 has been mentioned in a political/economic context, especially in light of the summit between Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping on October 30, 2025, in South Korea. Trump used his social media to announce, “THE G2 WILL BE CONVENING SHORTLY!”
• Power Equilibrium: Referring to the United States and China as “G2” suggests a lack of distinction between the countries’ relative power, or a “geo-economic condominium,” whereby the two would work in concert to address global issues, essentially acknowledging China was an equal in global decision making. This construct was largely rejected by previous U.S. administrations, as it could involve sidelining other allies and partners.
• Historical Baggage: The idea of “Group of Two” was proposed by American economist C. Fred Bergsten in 2005, but Washington opted to avoid use of the term due to allies’ fears of being excluded from international decision-making regarding global governance. Thereby the revival of the phrase has evoked concern amongst U.S. allies, particularly with regard to India
