What is a Polymer?

Why was it in the news?

As of March 2026, the intensifying conflict between regional powers has sent shockwaves through the global commodity markets. This has directly impacted India’s manufacturing and construction sectors:

  • Price Volatility: Since crude oil is the primary feedstock for polymers, any threat to oil supply leads to a massive price hike. In just 10 days, polymer prices (like PP, HDPE, and PVC) surged by nearly 35,000 per metric ton.
  • Supply Chain Disruption: Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz—a critical chokepoint for global oil and chemical shipments—have made it difficult for Indian manufacturers to source raw materials.
  • Production Halt: Industrial hubs like Morbi in Gujarat have reported that plastic processing units and pump-set manufacturers have stopped taking new orders due to the unpredictability of raw material costs.

What is a Polymer?

A polymer is a substance consisting of very large molecules, or macromolecules, composed of many repeating subunits. While polymers can be natural (like DNA or Silk), the “war impact” specifically concerns Synthetic Polymers derived from petroleum.

The Three Main “Impacted” Polymers:

  1. Polyethylene (PE): Used for packaging, plastic bags, and containers.
  2. Polypropylene (PP): Essential for automotive parts, textiles, and medical devices.
  3. Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC): Critical for the construction industry (pipes, window frames, and flooring).
