Why in News ?
The Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu, has achieved “criticality.” * Criticality Simplified: Think of it like successfully starting a car engine for the first time. It means the nuclear reactor has started a self-sustaining chain reaction. It doesn’t need an outside “spark” anymore; it is now running on its own and is ready to eventually produce electricity.

Why is it called a “Breeder” Reactor?
Most nuclear reactors are like wood stoves—they burn fuel and eventually run out. A Breeder Reactor is special because it acts like a “magical lamp” (often called Akshay Patra):
The Three-Stage Plan:
This event marks India’s official entry into Stage 2 of its long-term nuclear strategy, designed decades ago by Dr. Homi J. Bhabha.
| Stage | Technology | Main Goal |
| Stage 1 | Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR) | Uses natural Uranium to produce electricity and Plutonium. |
| Stage 2 | Fast Breeder Reactors (PFBR) | Uses the Plutonium from Stage 1 to produce power and “breed” more fuel. |
| Stage 3 | Thorium-Based Reactors | Will use India’s massive Thorium reserves to provide energy for centuries. |
Why is this a Big Deal for India?
India has successfully “switched on” a special kind of reactor that creates its own fuel. This is the second step in a three-step plan to eventually use our own huge Thorium reserves to power the entire country with clean, limitless energy.
