NITI Aayog has unveiled a landmark series of eleven study reports detailing India’s dual path toward becoming a developed nation (Viksit Bharat @ 2047) and achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070.
The final set of four reports was released on February 10, 2026, at the Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi. These documents represent India’s first government-led, integrated modeling exercise to align economic growth with climate commitments.

The reports focus on four critical areas where structural shifts are necessary to meet future demands sustainably.
| Sector | Core Challenge / Statistic | Strategic Focus |
| Buildings | 86% of floor space for 2070 is yet to be built; AC ownership to rise from 10% to 80%. | Passive design, super-efficient appliances, and low-carbon materials to prevent “energy lock-in.” |
| Agriculture | Largest employer; both a source and a “sink” for emissions. | “Strategic Sequencing”: Focus on micro-irrigation and fertilizer optimization before energy substitution. |
| Waste | Needs transition from disposal to resource recovery. | 100% door-to-door collection; transforming waste into Bio-CNG, compost, and treated wastewater. |
| Social | 40% of districts face high climate risks; transition affects land use and migration. | Human-centric development: Focus on health benefits (reduced pollution) and climate-ready healthcare. |
The study identifies four cross-cutting drivers essential for success:
Electrification: Rapidly shifting energy usage to electric platforms.
Greening the Grid: Transitioning power generation to renewable sources.
Mission LiFE: Encouraging large-scale behavioral changes in consumption.
Circularity: Reducing reliance on virgin resources through recycling and reuse.
