What is Lapu-Lapu Day?

  • Lapu-Lapu Day is observed on April 27 each year to honor the significant role of Lapu-Lapu, a chieftain from the Mactan Island in the Philippines, in resisting Spanish colonization.
  • The day marks the anniversary of the Battle of Mactan on April 27, 1521, where Lapu-Lapu led his warriors to defeat the Spanish forces under Ferdinand Magellan.
  • This battle is celebrated as a symbol of indigenous resistance and national pride in the Philippines. Magellan, a Portuguese explorer sailing for Spain, was killed during the conflict, and Lapu-Lapu’s victory is seen as a defiance against colonial oppression.

What is Known About Lapu-Lapu?

  • Lapu-Lapu was a native chieftain of Mactan who refused to submit to Spanish rule. The story of his heroism became popular through Magellan’s expedition and a basic version of the events.
  • According to historical accounts, Magellan demanded tribute from Lapu-Lapu, but the chieftain, supported by the allegiance of several other chieftains led by Chief Zula, rejected this demand.
