International Tourism Mart (ITM) 2026

Why in News?

India will host the International Tourism Mart (ITM) 2026 in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, from October 27 to November 1, 2026. The event is organised by the Ministry of Tourism.

Key Highlights:

• Venue: Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh
• Dates: October 27 – November 1, 2026
• Organised by: Ministry of Tourism, Government of India
• International Participation: Delegates from around 20 countries are expected to participate, including China.
• Objective: Promote the tourism potential of North-Eastern India and strengthen international tourism cooperation.

Strategic Significance:

• Tawang is strategically important because it lies close to the India–China border and is part of Arunachal Pradesh.
• China claims Arunachal Pradesh as “Zangnan” (South Tibet), while India considers Arunachal Pradesh an integral and inalienable part of India.
• Therefore, holding an international event in Tawang has significance beyond tourism and highlights India’s administrative presence and sovereignty over the region.

Importance for North-East:

The event helps to:

• Promote North-Eastern tourism globally.
• Highlight the region’s rich cultural and natural heritage.
• Improve international connectivity and tourism partnerships.
• Generate employment and local economic opportunities.
• Strengthen the region’s integration with India’s wider tourism economy.

India–China Dimension:

The participation of China, despite the continuing boundary dispute, gives the event an additional diplomatic dimension, though participation in a tourism event should not be interpreted as a settlement or change in the India–China boundary dispute.
