International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) Summit 2026:

International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) Summit 2026:

The International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) is currently making headlines because India is hosting the first-ever IBCA Summit in New Delhi on June 1-2, 2026. This is a landmark moment in India’s “Eco-Diplomacy,” positioning the country as a global leader in wildlife conservation.

Key Points :

The focus is on the upcoming June 2026 Summit and the drafting of the ‘Delhi Declaration’:

  • The Delhi Declaration: This is set to be the world’s first international political agreement specifically for big cat conservation. It will focus on “transboundary cooperation” (countries working together across borders) and the ‘One Health’ approach (linking human, animal, and environmental health).
  • Saudi Arabia Joining: In May 2026, Saudi Arabia announced its intention to formally join, becoming the 26th member country.
  • Global Reach: India has invited 95 “range countries” (nations where these cats live naturally) to the summit.

What is the IBCA?

Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April 2023 (marking 50 years of Project Tiger), the IBCA is an India-led global alliance dedicated to protecting the seven major big cats and their habitats.

  • The Seven Big Cats: Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Cheetah, Jaguar, and Puma.
  • India’s Unique Role: India is the only country in the world that is home to five of these seven species (Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, and Cheetah).
  • Headquarters: New Delhi, India.
  • Funding: The Indian government has committed ₹150 crore (approx. $18 million) for the initial five years (2023–2028).

Key Objectives & Impact:

The IBCA is modeled after the International Solar Alliance (ISA), showcasing India’s shift toward leading global environmental policy.

  • Halt & Reverse Decline: The primary goal is to stop the decrease in big cat populations worldwide.
  • Knowledge Repository: Creating a centralized database to share India’s successful expertise (like Project Tiger) with other nations in Asia, Africa, and South America.
  • Combat Wildlife Crime: Strengthening international intelligence to crush illegal poaching and smuggling syndicates.
  • Financial Support: Creating a system to help poorer nations fund their own wildlife protection efforts.
