The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is an international body dedicated to strengthening the link between science and policy regarding biodiversity.
Established: 2012 in Panama City by 94 governments (now includes 150).
Headquarters: Bonn, Germany.
Status: While it performs similar functions to the IPCC, it is not a United Nations body, though it is supported by several UN agencies.
The report highlights a critical imbalance between economic activity and environmental health:
Financial Disparity: Global spending significantly favors activities that damage nature over those that conserve it.
Underfunding: Ecosystem restoration and nature protection remain severely underfunded.
Greenwashing: Many companies claim sustainability without creating real, measurable impact.
Threats to Indigenous Lands: Approximately 60% of indigenous lands are threatened by industrial expansion.
High-Impact Sectors: The primary drivers of damage include agriculture, forestry, mining, energy, construction, and transport.

India faces specific socio-economic risks due to environmental degradation:
Community Impact: Biodiversity loss and climate change are directly affecting farmers, fishers, and coastal communities.
Security Risks: Environmental “shocks” (like extreme weather) pose serious threats to food security and general livelihoods.
Business Mandate: Indian banks, regulators, and companies are urged to immediately integrate nature-related risks into their financial planning.
To address these issues, the report suggests a multi-pronged approach:
Systemic Change: Transformative reform of economic and financial systems is required.
Subsidies: Phasing out harmful subsidies and introducing mandatory corporate reporting.
Corporate Accountability: Businesses must set clear biodiversity targets and track real-world outcomes.
Beyond GDP: Economic success should focus on long-term sustainability rather than just short-term growth.
