INS Androth

Why in News? The Indian Navy is set to commission INS Androth, the second Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), at Visakhapatnam. This follows the Navy’s recent induction of modern warships and marks a step forward in India’s maritime self-reliance and naval modernisation.

About

  • INS Androth is an Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata. Its primary role is detecting and neutralising submarines in shallow waters, thereby enhancing India’s coastal and regional maritime security.
  • The ship strengthens the Eastern Naval Command at Visakhapatnam and is part of India’s push for Atmanirbhar Bharat in defence manufacturing. It contributes to balanced naval modernisation, complementing other recently inducted warships such as INS Arnala, Nistar, Udaygiri, and Nilgiri.
