Astrobase Space Technologies, a Bengaluru-based private space company, unveiled EVEREST, India’s first privately developed 800 kN Full-Flow Staged Combustion (FFSC) LOX-Methane rocket engine on 7 August 2026.
India has now joined Russia, USA and China in developing FFSC engine technology.
Full-Flow Staged Combustion (FFSC) is an advanced liquid rocket-engine architecture in which:
Both fuel and oxidiser pass through separate pre-burners.
The gases produced in pre-burners drive the turbopumps.
These gases are then sent back into the main combustion chamber.
Thus, almost all propellant ultimately contributes to thrust generation.
Simple flow:
Fuel + Oxidiser → Pre-burners → Turbopumps → Main Combustion Chamber → Thrust
Higher propulsion efficiency
Better throttle control
Greater potential for reusable launch vehicles
Better utilisation of propellant
Supports high-thrust launch systems
Suitable for future heavy-lift and reusable rockets
EVEREST uses Liquid Oxygen (LOX) + Methane.
Advantages:
Relatively cleaner combustion
Lower residue and easier engine refurbishment
Suitable for reusable launch systems
Supports faster turnaround between missions
Engine: EVEREST
Thrust: 800 kN
Propellant: LOX–Methane
Developer: Astrobase Space Technologies
Location: Bengaluru
Technology: Full-Flow Staged Combustion
India: First private FFSC engine
Global position: Fourth country with FFSC technology
High-thrust FFSC engines have been developed by companies such as:
SpaceX — USA
Stoke Space — USA
LandSpace — China
SpaceX’s Raptor is currently the operational example of a high-thrust FFSC engine.
EVEREST could enable reusable launch vehicles capable of carrying up to 30 tonnes to Low Earth Orbit (LEO), opening possibilities for:
Commercial satellite launches
Strategic missions
Medium-lift launch vehicles
Lower-cost and more frequent space access
The engine also uses advanced manufacturing, including large-scale 3D printing.
Development began: 2024
Subsystems have already been tested.
Integrated hot-fire testing is planned at Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh.
First flight target: December 2028
Around 20 engines are planned to be manufactured and tested before the first orbital flight.
Current capacity: 6–8 engines/year
Planned capacity: 60 engines/year
The project has been selected under IN-SPACe’s Technology Adoption Fund.
IN-SPACe:
Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre — an autonomous, single-window agency under the Department of Space that facilitates and promotes private-sector participation in India’s space sector.
Space Technology + Private Space Sector + Reusable Rockets + Advanced Manufacturing + Atmanirbhar Bharat
“EVEREST marks a shift from merely participating in the space economy to developing critical propulsion technologies within the private sector.”
Conclusion:
The development of EVEREST strengthens India’s indigenous propulsion capability and supports the transition towards reusable, cost-effective and commercially competitive space transportation systems.
Fuel + Oxidiser → Pre-burner → Turbopump → Main Combustion Chamber → Thrust
Propulsion Efficiency
Throttle Control
Propellant Utilisation
Reusable Launch Vehicles
Reusable rockets
