Why in News ? According to a report published in June by a U.K.-based charity, nearly 6 million donkeys are killed every year globally to produce a traditional Chinese medicine called Ejiao. This problem of animal cruelty, according to data and reports, is fuelled by a gap between demand and supply in China. It has also led to many other issues spanning multiple countries across continents.

What is Ejiao?

• Ejiao is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) product.
• Made by boiling donkey skins to extract gelatin (collagen).
• The gelatin is dried into blocks, powders, or liquids and consumed as medicine, tonic, or in food products.

Traditional Uses (as per TCM)

• Improve blood circulation.
• Treat anemia and dizziness.
• Help with menstrual disorders (heavy bleeding, irregular periods).
• Enhance fertility and reproductive health.
• Slow down aging and improve skin.
