E-Highways

Why in News? India is set to transform its road infrastructure with the potential to build 5,500 kilometers of e-highways by 2027, according to a report published recently.

What are E-Highways?

E-highways, or electric highways, are road networks equipped with infrastructure to support electric vehicles (EVs), primarily through overhead electric lines or embedded conductive systems that allow EVs to charge while driving or at designated stations.

  • Technology: E-highways use dynamic charging systems, such as overhead catenary lines (similar to electric trains) or inductive charging pads embedded in the road. These systems deliver power to compatible EVs, reducing the need for large onboard batteries.
  • Purpose: They aim to enhance EV adoption by addressing range anxiety, enabling long-distance travel, and supporting green transportation goals by reducing fossil fuel dependency.
  • Global Context: The concept originated in countries like Sweden and Germany, where pilot projects (e.g., Siemens’ eHighway in Germany) have tested electric roads since 2016. India’s initiative aligns with its net-zero target by 2070.
