Daily Current Affairs: 7 July 2026/Mamallan Reservoir Project/मल्लालन जलाशय (Mamallan Reservoir) परियोजना:

Why in News?

The project is a proposed water infrastructure initiative aimed at increasing the drinking water supply for Chennai.

  • Protest: Coastal communities and activists are opposing the project, arguing that it will destroy the Nemmeli-Kovalam tidal salt marsh, a vital ecological buffer.
  • Budget and Scale: The project is estimated to cost approximately 342.6 crore rupees and is designed to provide water to about 13 lakh people.
  • Panel Concerns: A recent independent panel highlighted that such projects, often branded as part of the Blue Economy, are leading to the dispossession of traditional fishing communities.

What is a Tidal Salt Marsh? Definition and Ecology

  • Definition: A tidal salt marsh is a type of coastal wetland found in the upper intertidal zone between mean sea level and high tide. It is regularly flooded and drained by saltwater tides.
  • Unique Habitat: These ecosystems are characterized by salt-tolerant vegetation known as halophytes and deep, nutrient-rich soil composed of mud and peat.
  • Blue Carbon Hub: Salt marshes are highly efficient carbon sinks, storing significant amounts of carbon in their roots and soil, often more effectively per square meter than terrestrial forests.

Other examples:

The Rann of Kutch (Gujarat) :

  • Significance: This is the largest salt marsh in India and one of the largest in the world.
  • Nature: It is a seasonal tidal salt marsh. During the monsoon, seawater from the Gulf of Kutch floods the low-lying plains; as the water evaporates in the dry season, it leaves behind vast, white salt-crusted mudflats.
  • Key Biodiversity: It serves as a vital breeding ground for Greater Flamingos and is the only habitat for the endangered Indian Wild Ass.

Sundarbans (West Bengal) :

  • Significance: While primarily famous as the world’s largest mangrove forest, the Sundarbans also contain extensive saline salt marshes and tidal mudflats.
  • Nature: These are active, permanent coastal marshes influenced by the daily ebb and flow of tidal water from the Bay of Bengal and the distributaries of the Ganga-Brahmaputra delta.
  • Key Biodiversity: They support complex food webs involving salt-tolerant vegetation, crustaceans (like fiddler crabs), and are critical nurseries for various marine and estuarine fish species.

Bhitarkanika Mangroves & Wetlands (Odisha):

  • Significance: This region features complex intertidal zones that include saline marshes and expansive mudflats.
  • Nature: These marshes are integral to the deltaic region of the Brahmani and Baitarani rivers. They are permanently subject to tidal inundation, which maintains the high salinity required for the survival of specialized salt-marsh plants and diverse aquatic life.
  • Key Biodiversity: They provide nesting grounds for the Olive Ridley sea turtles along the nearby coast and host a dense variety of halophytic (salt-loving) flora.

Pulicat Lake and Coastal Marshes (Andhra Pradesh/Tamil Nadu):

  • Significance: Pulicat is a brackish water lagoon that contains significant salt marsh fringes and tidal mudflats.
  • Nature: It is the second-largest brackish water lagoon in India. The interaction between the Bay of Bengal and the lake creates a dynamic saline environment where marshland vegetation thrives along the edges of the lagoon and on the islands within it.
  • Key Biodiversity: It acts as a massive feeding ground for migratory birds, particularly flamingos, and provides a rich habitat for various species of fish, prawns, and mollusks that thrive in the fluctuating salinity levels.

Global Examples of Tidal Salt Marshes:

Globally, these ecosystems are most extensive in temperate and high-latitude coastal regions where sheltered conditions allow fine-grained sediments to settle.

  • Bay of Fundy, North America: Famous for having some of the highest tidal ranges in the world, this region hosts extensive, biologically productive salt marshes that are essential for migratory birds and marine life.
  • Morecambe Bay, United Kingdom: A large, shallow coastal embayment that features vast areas of salt marshes and mudflats, serving as a critical habitat for wading birds.
  • The Camargue (Rhône Delta), France: A classic example of a deltaic salt marsh, where the river’s interaction with the Mediterranean Sea creates a mosaic of wetlands, lagoons, and salt marshes supporting diverse flora and fauna.
  • Eastern Coast of the United States: Stretching from New England to the Gulf Coast, these marshes are often dominated by Spartina (cordgrass) species and are essential buffers against storm surges and coastal erosion.
