Context:
A major surge of Cyclosporiasis cases has been reported across the US (particularly in Michigan and Ohio).
Key Trigger: Contaminated shredded iceberg lettuce sourced from Mexico and served at specific food chains.
About Cyclosporiasis:
Pathogen: Caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis.
Transmission: Fecal-oral route. It spreads when food or water is contaminated with infected human feces. It is not typically transmitted directly from person to person.
Nature of Disease: Seasonal gastrointestinal illness (peaks during summer months).
Symptoms: Watery, explosive diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue, and low-grade fever lasting from days to over a month.
Treatment: Managed primarily with specific antibiotics.
Prevention & Food Safety Protocols:
The parasite tightly adheres to the “nooks and crannies” of leafy greens (lettuce, spinach, cilantro) and berries, making standard washing insufficient sometimes.
Health Recommendations: Prefer purchasing whole produce/heads of lettuce over pre-washed bagged mixes; strip outer layers, wash under running water, or cook thoroughly to kill the pathogen.
