The Chandrashekara Temple, located in Guttala village of Haveri district, Karnataka, is an ancient temple renowned for its historical and cultural significance.

Architectural Features:

  • Style: Built in the traditional Dravidian architectural style, the temple reflects the craftsmanship typical of medieval Karnataka.
  • Dedication: The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshiped as Chandrashekara, a serene form of the deity.

Historical Importance:

  • The temple gained prominence with the discovery of an epigraphic inscription dated August 18, 1539 CE, which is the earliest recorded instance of a natural disaster in India.
  • This inscription, written in Kannada, details the catastrophic drought that claimed the lives of 6,307 people, highlighting the humanitarian response led by local rulers.
