Himalayan Glaciers: Economic Dependence and Climate Risk

Why in News?

Recent floods in Nepal’s Trishuli River have renewed concerns over rapid Himalayan glacier change and its implications for India’s water and economic security.

Key Findings of the Report:

The report “A Resilient Himalaya: Protecting a Region at Risk and Securing Future Prosperity”, prepared by Systemiq with the Integrated Mountain Initiative, highlights the economic importance of the Himalayas.

  • Around ₹64.8 lakh crore, or 21.5% of India’s FY24 GDP, is estimated to be dependent on the Himalayas.

  • This is not a forecast of GDP loss from glacier melting; it represents economic activity dependent on Himalayan resources, especially water.

  • The estimate includes:

    • Direct: Economic activity in Himalayan states.

    • Indirect: Downstream agriculture, manufacturing, hydropower and services dependent on Himalayan water.

    • Induced: Supply-chain and income-spending effects.

Why Are Himalayan Glaciers Important?

  • Glaciers function as natural water reservoirs, storing water as ice and releasing it gradually.

  • Himalayan rivers—Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra—support agriculture, industries, cities and hydropower.

  • Gangotri Glacier is the principal source of the Bhagirathi River, an important headstream of the Ganga.

What Is “Peak Water”?

  • Peak Water refers to the point when glacier meltwater contribution to rivers reaches its maximum.

  • After this point, continued glacier loss reduces the long-term water supply.

  • Himalayan river basins are expected to approach Peak Water around the middle of this century.

  • The Hindu Kush Himalaya could potentially lose up to 80% of its present glacier volume by 2100 under current trajectories.

Himalayas as a Disaster Hotspot:

  • The Himalayas cover about 18% of India’s land area but account for nearly 35% of its disasters.

  • Climate-related risks can affect:

    • Food and water security

    • Agriculture and hydropower

    • Supply chains

    • Human settlements and livelihoods

    • Public finances and reconstruction costs

Black Carbon: A Local Climate Lever

  • Black carbon is soot produced by incomplete combustion.

  • It settles on snow and reduces its reflectivity, causing greater absorption of solar radiation—a process known as snow darkening.

  • South Asian black carbon is estimated to contribute significantly to Himalayan glacier mass loss.

  • Brick kilns are a major anthropogenic source of black-carbon emissions.

Brick Kilns: Potential Solution

  • Zigzag kiln technology can reduce:

    • Black carbon and particulate emissions by about 70%

    • Fuel consumption by 20–30%

  • Adoption remains uneven, with Punjab and Haryana having completed the transition, while Uttar Pradesh has reached about 56% adoption.

Way Forward:

  • Accelerate the transition to cleaner brick-kiln technologies.

  • Address emissions from brick kilns, transport, cookstoves and crop-residue burning together.

  • Adopt an airshed-based approach instead of isolated city- or sector-level action.

  • Strengthen glacier monitoring, early-warning systems and climate-resilient infrastructure.

  • Improve water-use efficiency in agriculture and urban areas.

  • Strengthen India–Himalayan region cooperation on water, disasters and climate adaptation.

Key Takeaway:

The Himalayan crisis is not only a glacier or environmental issue—it is a water, agricultural, energy and economic-security issue for India. Reducing global greenhouse-gas emissions remains essential, while controlling black carbon offers a more immediate regional intervention.

“A Resilient Himalaya: Protecting a Region at Risk and Securing Future Prosperity” रिपोर्ट Systemiq और Integrated Mountain Initiative द्वारा तैयार की गई है।

“Peak Water”

  • Peak Water

Black Carbon

Zigzag Kiln Technology:

  • Airshed-based Approach
