ISRO Gyanex: Pioneering Astronaut Training for 2027 Mission

Simulation Missions

ISRO has started conducting simulation missions under the Gaganyaan programme to train astronauts and prepare for India’s first human spaceflight mission, scheduled for 2027. These simulation missions, called Analogue Experiments (Gyanex), aim to develop essential protocols and test astronaut readiness for space conditions.

ISRO Gyanex: Pioneering Astronaut Training for 2027 Mission

Key Points: Simulation Missions

Analogue Experiments (Gyanex): These missions simulate spacecraft-like conditions on Earth, with the only major difference being the presence of gravity.

Purpose: To train astronauts in communication, resource management, and problem-solving in confined environments, similar to actual space missions.

Duration and Conditions: Astronauts stay in a confined mock-up spacecraft environment for several days, performing activities as they would during a real mission.

Training Activities: During the mission, astronauts conduct scientific experiments, eat space-specific food developed by DRDO, and practice using space station-compatible equipment.

International Collaboration: This training complements astronaut preparation being carried out in Russia and the United States, including microgravity environment training.

Recent Mission: The first Gyanex mission took place in July 2025 at a static mock-up simulator in Bangalore, involving two astronauts who completed 11 scientific experiments.

Data Collection: Various physical and psychological parameters were recorded to analyze the effects of living in confinement, helping to refine mission protocols.

Future Plans: ISRO plans to conduct multiple Gyanex missions before the actual human spaceflight.

Launch Timeline: India’s first human spaceflight mission under Gaganyaan is planned for 2027.

About About Gyanex:

Gyanex (Gaganyaan Analogue Experiments) is a series of simulation missions designed by ISRO to train astronauts and test mission protocols before India’s first human spaceflight mission under the Gaganyaan programme. These experiments replicate various aspects of living and working in space, except for microgravity, which cannot be fully simulated on Earth.

Key Features of Gyanex:

Simulation of Space Conditions:
Gyanex recreates spacecraft-like conditions in a static mock-up module, allowing astronauts to train in a controlled environment.

Objective:
To prepare astronauts for the challenges of space missions by focusing on

  • Communication and coordination among crew members
  • Resource management in confined spaces
  • Emergency handling and decision-making
  • Psychological endurance and stress management
