India Energy Stack (IES)

The India Energy Stack (IES) is a Digital Public Infrastructure initiative by the Ministry of Power to create a unified, secure, and interoperable digital platform for India’s energy sector. It tackles issues like fragmented systems, lack of unique identifiers, and limited data access. Inspired by Aadhaar and UPI, IES aims to transform the power sector with seamless data exchange and real-time analytics.

Key Features:

  • Unique IDs for consumers, assets, and transactions.
  • Consent-based real-time data sharing.
  • Open APIs for system integration and innovation.
  • Utility Intelligence Platform (UIP) for real-time analytics.
  • Tools for consumer access to markets and dynamic pricing.

Objectives:

  • Integrate renewables and electric vehicles.
  • Boost DISCOM efficiency.
  • Ensure grid stability and transparent services.
  • Support India’s economic and net-zero goals.

Implementation:

  • A task force, including experts like Nandan Nilekani, oversees development.
  • A 12-month Proof of Concept will test IES and UIP with DISCOMs in Mumbai, Gujarat, and Delhi.
  • A white paper and national rollout plan are in progress.

Challenges Addressed:

  • Fragmented digital systems.
  • Lack of interoperability.
  • Scalability issues with proprietary platforms.
  • Need for real-time data to meet energy demand.

Expected Impact:

  • Enable peer-to-peer energy trading and demand-response programs.
  • Support carbon offsetting and renewable integration.
  • Build a data-driven, efficient energy ecosystem.
