Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP)

Why in News? India is transitioning towards eco-friendly port operations by introducing electric tugboats under the Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP). The Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) at Kandla has become the first port in India to procure battery-powered tugboats, marking a significant step toward sustainability in maritime operations.

Key Points

Introduction of Electric Tugboats:

  • Deendayal Port Authority (DPA): First Indian port to order a battery-powered tugboat under GTTP.
  • Contract Details:
    • Tugboat with 60-tonne bollard pull capacity.
    • 15-year charter at Rs 6.3 lakh per day.
    • Infrastructure for charging to be developed by the contractor; power supplied by the port.
  • Renewable Energy: Kandla port operates 22 MW of wind-based renewable energy projects to support operations.

Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP):

  • Phase-I Timeline: October 1, 2024 – December 31, 2027.
  • Participating Ports:
    • Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA).
    • Deendayal Port Authority (DPA).
    • Paradip Port Authority.
    • VO Chidambaranar Port Authority.
  • Mandate: Each port to procure or charter at least two green tugs based on standardised designs and specifications by the Standing Specification Committee (SSC).

Progress in Other Ports:

  • Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA):
    • Tender for two green tugs; bidder to be finalised by month-end.
    • Currently operates 10 diesel-powered tugs.
  • Paradip Port Authority:
    • Tender for one electric tug with a submission deadline of July 8.
  • VO Chidambaranar Port Authority:
    • Work order issued to a Mumbai-based company for an electric tug.

Investment and Future Goals:

  • Total Investment: Rs 1,000 crore for building green tugs.
  • Transition Targets:
    • All tugs at Indian major ports to become green by 2040.
    • Future tugs to comply with GTTP standards starting 2033.

  • Maritime India Vision 2030 (MIV 2030):
    • Ports to source 60% electricity from renewable sources.
    • Achieve a 30% reduction in carbon emissions per tonne of cargo by 2030.
  • Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047:
    • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions from port vessels by 30% by 2030.
