Why in News? President Droupadi Murmu has nominated Supreme Court judge Surya Kant as the executive chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).

As per convention, the post of NALSA executive chairman is held by the second senior-most judge of the Supreme Court of India.
About National Legal Services Authority (NALSA):
· The National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) is a statutory body constituted under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987. · It plays a pivotal role in ensuring access to justice for all, especially marginalized and weaker sections of society, as envisioned under Article 39A of the Constitution of India. Composition of NALSA: The authority is composed of key members responsible for its functioning: Patron-in-Chief: · The Chief Justice of India (CJI) is the Patron-in-Chief of NALSA. · This symbolizes the apex judiciary’s oversight over legal aid services. Executive Chairman: · A serving or retired Judge of the Supreme Court is appointed as the Executive Chairman. · Appointment is made by the President of India in consultation with the CJI. |
