Hoyle-Narlikar Theory of Gravity

Why in News?  Jayant Vishnu Narlikar, a prominent Indian astrophysicist was recently died.

About Him:

  • Jayant Vishnu Narlikar, a prominent Indian astrophysicist, is known for his pioneering work in cosmology and astrophysics.
  • He co-developed the Hoyle-Narlikar Theory of Gravity, which integrates Albert Einstein’s relativity with Mach’s principle.
  • As the founding director of the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) in Pune, Narlikar has made significant contributions to research and education in astrophysics. He has also written extensively to popularize science, authoring both academic papers and science fiction novels in English and Marathi.
About Hoyle-Narlikar Theory of Gravity:

The Hoyle-Narlikar Theory of Gravity, developed by British astrophysicist Fred Hoyle and Indian astrophysicist Jayant Narlikar, is an alternative theory to Albert Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity. Proposed in the 1960s, it integrates concepts from Mach’s Principle and quantum field theory, providing a unique perspective on the nature of gravitation and the cosmos.

Key Features:

Incorporation of Mach’s Principle:

    • The theory emphasizes Mach’s Principle, which states that the inertial properties of matter are influenced by the distribution of all other matter in the universe.
    • Unlike General Relativity, where gravity is a geometric property of spacetime, Hoyle-Narlikar theory attributes gravitational interactions to a “direct action” between matter particles.

Variable Mass Hypothesis:

    • Objects’ masses are not constant but vary depending on the distribution of matter in the universe.
    • This idea contrasts with the assumption of fixed mass in Newtonian mechanics and General Relativity.

No Gravitational Waves or Black Holes:

·         The theory does not predict gravitational waves or the existence of black holes as described in Einstein’s framework.

Cosmic Creation Field (C-field):

    • Introduces a creation field (C-field) to describe matter creation, providing an explanation for the expanding universe without invoking a singular “Big Bang.”
