AIM4NatuRe Initiative

Why in News? Recently, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) launched the AIM4NatuRe initiative on the occasion of Earth Day.

About AIM4NatuRe Initiative:

  • AIM4NatuRe stands for Accelerating Innovative Monitoring for Nature Restoration.
  • It is an innovative initiative leveraging technology and data to enhance nature restoration efforts.
  • The initiative will complement FAO’s existing AIM4Forests programme and enable the creation of a global dataset to monitor restoration progress.
  • Countries will receive support to build capacity and use advanced technology to track and report their achievements toward Target 2 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF).
  • Target: Restore at least 30% of degraded ecosystems by 2030.

The Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) refers to the framework adopted under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to address the ongoing biodiversity crisis and to promote the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. The GBF was formally agreed upon during the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP 15) to the CBD, which took place in December 2022 in Montreal, Canada. This framework aims to stop biodiversity loss, enhance ecosystem restoration, and ensure that biodiversity is integrated into policies and economic models globally.

30×30 Target:

  • One of the central commitments of the GBF is the target to protect 30% of the Earth’s land and marine areas by 2030. This is aimed at reversing the loss of biodiversity and ensuring the preservation of key ecosystems.
