𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐬?

Researchers at 𝐕𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 (VIT) identified antibiotic-producing bacteria in the 𝐑𝐚𝐣𝐠𝐢𝐫 𝐡𝐨𝐭 𝐬𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠, Nalanda, Bihar.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬?

• 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬 are heat-loving microorganisms that thrive at high temperatures, generally around 45–70°C.

• Found in 𝐡𝐨𝐭 𝐬𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬, deep-sea thermal vents and compost.

• Some produce antimicrobial compounds to compete with other microorganisms.

𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐚𝐣𝐠𝐢𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲:

• 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚 constituted around 40–43% of the microbial diversity found in the lake.

• This bacterial group is a major source of antibiotics such as streptomycin and tetracycline.

• Researchers identified seven strains producing antimicrobials effective against several disease-causing bacteria.

• Another study isolated diethyl phthalate, which inhibited Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium responsible for foodborne listeriosis. Further research is needed to assess its therapeutic potential.
