Why in News?

  • Kerala Outbreak: The state of Kerala is currently witnessing a significant outbreak of Bacillary Dysentery (Shigellosis).

  • Case Statistics: Health authorities have confirmed 85 cases this year, with at least 34 new cases reported in June alone.

  • Public Health Concern: The highly contagious nature of the infection, particularly among children, has prompted state-wide monitoring and emergency health responses.

Key Points:

  • Hotspots: Wayanad district is identified as the epicenter, with large numbers of symptomatic individuals reported in local schools and the Sultan Bathery Taluk Headquarters Hospital.

  • Spread: Significant clusters have also been identified across Kozhikode, Thiruvananthapuram, and Alapuzha.

  • Nature of Infection: Shigellosis is a highly contagious bacterial infection that primarily affects the intestines.

  • Transmission: It spreads easily through contaminated food, water, or direct person-to-person contact (fecal-oral route). Even small amounts of the bacteria can cause infection.

About Shigellosis (Bacillary Dysentery):

  • Causative Agent: It is caused by a group of bacteria known as Shigella.

  • Symptoms: Common symptoms include:

    • Severe abdominal pain or cramps.

    • Bloody or mucus-filled diarrhea.

    • High fever.

    • Nausea and vomiting.

  • High-Risk Groups: Children are disproportionately affected due to lower immunity and hygiene practices in school environments.

  • Prevention & Control:

    • Hand Hygiene: Frequent handwashing with soap and water.

    • Water Safety: Ensuring the consumption of boiled or treated water.

    • Food Safety: Proper sanitation in food preparation and avoiding contaminated food sources.

    • Isolation: Isolating infected individuals to prevent community spread.
