The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has extended the deadline for receiving comments and counter-comments on its Consultation Paper regarding the “Regulatory Framework for Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) Communication.”

• New Deadline: 04.06.2026 (for written comments) and 18.06.2026 (for counter-comments).

What is V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) Communication?

V2X is a communication technology that allows a vehicle to share information with any entity that may affect the vehicle, and vice versa. It is a critical component for the future of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and autonomous driving.

Key Components of V2X:

• V2V (Vehicle-to-Vehicle): Exchange of safety-critical information between vehicles (e.g., speed, position, braking status) to prevent collisions.

• V2I (Vehicle-to-Infrastructure): Communication between vehicles and road infrastructure (e.g., traffic lights, toll gates, parking sensors) to optimize traffic flow.

• V2P (Vehicle-to-Pedestrian): Alerts for drivers about the presence of pedestrians or cyclists to enhance road safety.

• V2N (Vehicle-to-Network): Connects vehicles to the cellular network to provide real-time traffic data, weather updates, and infotainment.

Why is a Regulatory Framework Needed?

1. Safety & Standardization: Harmonizing technology standards to ensure that vehicles from different manufacturers can “talk” to each other and to infrastructure seamlessly.

2. Spectrum Management: V2X relies on specific frequency bands to transmit data. TRAI needs to allocate spectrum efficiently to avoid interference with other wireless services.

3. Data Security & Privacy: As vehicles become mobile data hubs, ensuring end-to-end encryption and protecting user privacy is paramount.

4. Interoperability: Ensuring that communication protocols remain consistent across different geographical regions and smart city projects.

5. Infrastructure Readiness: Encouraging investment in roadside units (RSUs) that can support V2X-enabled vehicles.

Significance for India:

• Smart Cities: V2X is essential for the success of smart city initiatives, specifically in managing urban traffic congestion and reducing carbon emissions.

• Road Safety: India has one of the highest road accident rates globally; V2X can play a role in “Vision Zero” (zero road fatalities) by providing real-time alerts.

• Autonomous Vehicle (AV) Ecosystem: Establishing a regulatory baseline is the first step toward preparing the Indian automotive industry for the global shift toward autonomous and connected vehicles.

2. स्पेक्ट्रम प्रबंधन: V2X डेटा संचारित करने के लिए विशिष्ट फ्रीक्वेंसी बैंड पर निर्भर करता है। अन्य वायरलेस सेवाओं के साथ हस्तक्षेप से बचने के लिए स्पेक्ट्रम का कुशल आवंटन आवश्यक है।

3. डेटा सुरक्षा और गोपनीयता: जैसे-जैसे वाहन मोबाइल डेटा हब बन रहे हैं, उपयोगकर्ता की गोपनीयता और डेटा एन्क्रिप्शन सुनिश्चित करना अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है।

4. इंटरोपेराबिलिटी (Interoperability): यह सुनिश्चित करना कि संचार प्रोटोकॉल विभिन्न भौगोलिक क्षेत्रों और स्मार्ट सिटी परियोजनाओं में समान रहें।
