Munich Security Conference (MSC)-2026

The Munich Security Conference (MSC), often referred to as the “Davos of Defense,” is the world’s most significant independent forum for international security policy.

The 62nd Munich Security Conference (MSC 2026) is currently taking place from February 13 to 15, 2026, at its traditional venue, the Hotel Bayerischer Hof in Munich, Germany.

Core Identity & Mission:

  • The “Marketplace of Ideas”: Unlike official government summits (like the G7 or NATO), the MSC is a private, informal event. It does not issue binding communiqués or treaties. Instead, it serves as a venue for “diplomatic speed-dating,” where world leaders can have off-the-record conversations to build trust.
  • Comprehensive Security: While it began as a Transatlantic military meeting (Wehrkunde), it now covers a broad spectrum including cybersecurity, climate change, energy security, and human rights.
  • Key Leadership: The current chairman is Wolfgang Ischinger (serving until former NATO head Jens Stoltenberg officially takes over).

MSC 2026: Key Themes:

The 2026 edition is set against a backdrop of “wrecking-ball politics,” as highlighted in the Munich Security Report 2026: “Under Destruction.”

Theme Focus Areas
Transatlantic Tension Growing uncertainty regarding US commitment to European defense and NATO guarantees.
Ukraine 2026 The war entering its fifth year; focus on long-term military support and potential negotiation prospects.
Middle East Security Prioritizing stability in the region amid ongoing conflicts.
Nuclear Deterrence Discussions on a “European-based deterrent” following the expiration of major arms control treaties like New START.
Technology & AI The impact of generative AI on the information environment and hybrid warfare.

Global Participation in 2026:

Over 450 senior decision-makers are in attendance, including:

  • USA: A large bipartisan delegation (50+ members) led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, aimed at mending ties after a volatile 2025.
  • Ukraine: President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, focusing on financial and military aid.
  • NATO: Secretary General Mark Rutte and Deputy Secretary General Radmila Shekerinska.
  • Global South: A record presence of leaders from Asia, Africa, and Latin America to discuss multipolarization.

Historical Significance:

  • Founded: In 1963 by Ewald-Heinrich von Kleist-Schmenzin, a member of the Stauffenberg circle (who tried to assassinate Hitler). His goal was to foster dialogue to prevent a Third World War.
  • Famous Moments: It is where Vladimir Putin gave his famous 2007 speech, signaling Russia’s pivot against Western expansion, and where the 2015 Iran Nuclear Deal saw critical informal breakthroughs.
