Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Report-2026

IPBES: Overview and Key Insights

1. What is IPBES?

The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is an international body dedicated to strengthening the link between science and policy regarding biodiversity.

  • Established: 2012 in Panama City by 94 governments (now includes 150).

  • Headquarters: Bonn, Germany.

  • Status: While it performs similar functions to the IPCC, it is not a United Nations body, though it is supported by several UN agencies.

2. Global Key Findings:

The report highlights a critical imbalance between economic activity and environmental health:

  • Financial Disparity: Global spending significantly favors activities that damage nature over those that conserve it.

  • Underfunding: Ecosystem restoration and nature protection remain severely underfunded.

  • Greenwashing: Many companies claim sustainability without creating real, measurable impact.

  • Threats to Indigenous Lands: Approximately 60% of indigenous lands are threatened by industrial expansion.

  • High-Impact Sectors: The primary drivers of damage include agriculture, forestry, mining, energy, construction, and transport.

3. Focus on India:

India faces specific socio-economic risks due to environmental degradation:

  • Community Impact: Biodiversity loss and climate change are directly affecting farmers, fishers, and coastal communities.

  • Security Risks: Environmental “shocks” (like extreme weather) pose serious threats to food security and general livelihoods.

  • Business Mandate: Indian banks, regulators, and companies are urged to immediately integrate nature-related risks into their financial planning.

4. Key Recommendations for Reform:

To address these issues, the report suggests a multi-pronged approach:

  • Systemic Change: Transformative reform of economic and financial systems is required.

  • Subsidies: Phasing out harmful subsidies and introducing mandatory corporate reporting.

  • Corporate Accountability: Businesses must set clear biodiversity targets and track real-world outcomes.

  • Beyond GDP: Economic success should focus on long-term sustainability rather than just short-term growth.
