Reading and revising is just 40% of the task, the main task in MAINS is to handle the actual exam stress and perform in it. If you have trained your brain to read the question fast, understand it, write precise answers within the given time limit, you are likely to score good marks. This comes with PRACTICE and hence the importance of answer writing, many times before facing the actual exam. Therefore, we work seriously on answer writing session during preparation known as Civil अभ्यास.
How to Write Good Answer?
Understand the Demand of the Question:
- Dissect the question: Identify directive words like Discuss, Analyze, Examine, Elucidate, Critically evaluate.
- Break it down: Understand what is being asked, not what you want to write.
- Avoid writing general knowledge or off-topic content.
Structure is Everything: Follow the IBC Format
- I – Introduction: Define or contextualize the topic in 2–3 lines.
- B – Body: Address all parts of the question with balanced, well-organized points.
- C – Conclusion: Summarize or suggest the way forward in 2–3 lines.
Stick to Word Limit
- Practice writing crisp, to-the-point answers within 150 or 250 words, depending on the question.
- Don’t overwrite – focus on quality, not quantity.
Subheadings & Bullet Points Help:
- Use subheadings to organize the body.
- Use bullet points for better readability, especially for listing pros/cons, causes, effects, etc.
Use Diagrams, Flowcharts, Maps:
- Use India/world maps in geography or IR questions.
- Flowcharts or mind-maps can show interlinkages and boost presentation.
Balanced & Multidimensional Approach:
- Include social, political, economic, environmental, ethical, historical dimensions.
- Show both sides if the question is analytical or critical.
Use Simple, Formal Language:
- No flowery English.
- Be precise and clear.
- Use keywords from the syllabus or question.
Back Answers with Examples:
- Use recent examples, case studies, facts, and data (preferably from official sources – NITI Aayog, Economic Survey, etc.).
- Use Supreme Court judgments, commissions, government schemes, etc.
Time Management:
- In GS, aim for ~7 minutes per 10-mark and ~11 minutes per 15-mark question.
