Why in News?
The Honey Mission started by the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) in wake of the Covid-19 pandemic have a benefited the migrant workers.
About The Honey Mission:
In general terms, beekeeping refers to the human activity of controlling and handling bees.
A beekeeper is a person who raises bees for the purpose of collecting honey or other products.
It was launched in 2017 by KVIC with the purpose of creating employment for the Adivasis, farmers, unemployed youth, and women.
It is noteworthy that the government has allocated 500 crore rupees for beekeeping under the Self-Reliant India Campaign.
According to the Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, honey production in India has now increased by 242 percent compared to the year 2005-06, while its exports have increased by 265 percent.
The increase in honey exports is a proof that bee-keeping will be an important factor towards achieving the goal of doubling farmers’ income by the year 2024.
The latest figures show that India is among the 5 largest producers of honey in the world, while in the year 2017-18, India was ranked eighth in the world with 9 thousand tonnes of honey production in terms of honey production.
Step taken by the Government:
The National Bee Board has created four modules for the training of beekeeping for the National Beekeeping and Honey Mission-NBHM, through which training of 30 lakh farmers in the country has given.
The government has also announced ‘Honey Mission’ under the ‘Sweet Revolution’, which consists mainly of four parts and will benefit the farmers immensely.
