India @ 79: A Journey of Resilience and Rising Aspirations
As the Tricolour was unfurled on India’s 79th Independence Day, the country stood proudly as a confident, resilient, and rising nation. India is not just the world’s largest democracy but also a nation that has successfully crafted its destiny since 1947.
Economic Rise: From $30 Billion to Trillions
- In 1947, India’s GDP was $30 billion.
- By 2025, India’s GDP is projected at $4.19 trillion, making it the 4th largest economy after the US, China, and Germany.
- In Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) terms, India is already the 3rd largest economy at $17.65 trillion (2025 IMF estimates).
This reflects not only strong economic fundamentals but also the aspiration to regain its civilisational legacy.
Transformative Social Progress:
- Poverty: From ~80% (1947) to just 3% (2021 PPP threshold).
- Literacy: From 3% (1951) to 77% (2023).
- Life Expectancy: From 32 years (1947) to 72 years (2023).
- Population: From 330 million (1947) to 46 billion (2025).
India’s social indicators tell the story of a society in motion, powered by education, health, and empowerment.
Agriculture: From Scarcity to Surplus:
- Foodgrain production: From 50 MMT (1947) to 9 MMT (2024–25).
- Rice exports: 20.2 MMT (FY25), making India the world’s largest rice exporter.
- Horticulture output: 15 times higher since independence.
- Milk production: 11 times higher.
- Egg production: 77 times higher.
India is now a net exporter of agriculture, unlike the US and China, which remain net importers.
Science, Technology, and Digital India:
- Space Missions: From Mangalyaan (Mars) to Chandrayaan’s landing on Moon’s South Pole, India has carved its place in global space exploration.

Challenges That Remain:
While India has achieved food security, nutritional security remains a concern, especially for children under five. Solutions lie in:
- Women’s education
- Improved maternal health
- Better sanitation (India becoming ODF is a milestone).
Rationalising Subsidies:
- Food subsidy: Rs 2.03 lakh crore (2025–26 Budget).
- Fertiliser subsidy: Rs 1.67 lakh crore.
- Total: Rs 3.71 lakh crore.
Studies show 20–25% subsidy leakages, highlighting the need to shift from subsidies to investments in R&D, value chains, and agri-innovation.
India and the World:
Comparison with China:
- China’s per capita income (2025): $13,690 (PPP $28,980).
- India’s per capita income (2025): $2,880 (PPP $12,130).
- India is ahead of Pakistan and Bangladesh, but far behind China.
- Yet, democracy remains India’s guiding compass, setting it apart from its neighbours.
The Road Ahead: Viksit Bharat @ 2047:
To realise the vision of a developed India by 2047, the focus must remain on:
- Accelerating inclusive growth.
- Cutting bureaucratic hurdles.
- Adopting a scientific culture.
- Balancing growth with environmental sustainability.

जैसे ही 79वें स्वतंत्रता दिवस पर तिरंगा लहराया गया, भारत आत्मविश्वासी, दृढ़ और उभरते राष्ट्र के रूप में खड़ा था। भारत न केवल दुनिया का सबसे बड़ा लोकतंत्र है, बल्कि 1947 से अपनी किस्मत खुद लिखने वाला देश भी है।
आर्थिक प्रगति: 30 अरब डॉलर से ट्रिलियन तक:
- 1947 में भारत की जीडीपी लगभग 30 अरब डॉलर थी।
- 2025 तक भारत की जीडीपी 19 ट्रिलियन डॉलर अनुमानित है, जिससे यह अमेरिका, चीन और जर्मनी के बाद चौथी सबसे बड़ी अर्थव्यवस्था होगी।
- क्रय शक्ति समानता (PPP) के आधार पर भारत पहले ही दुनिया की तीसरी सबसे बड़ी अर्थव्यवस्था है ($17.65 ट्रिलियन, IMF 2025 अनुमान)।

कृषि: अभाव से अधिशेष तक:
- अन्न उत्पादन: 50 मिलियन मीट्रिक टन (1947) से बढ़कर 9 MMT (2024–25)।
- चावल निर्यात: 20.2 MMT (FY25), भारत को दुनिया का सबसे बड़ा चावल निर्यातक बनाता है।
- बागवानी उत्पादन: आज़ादी के बाद से 15 गुना बढ़ोतरी।
- दूध उत्पादन: 11 गुना वृद्धि।
- अंडा उत्पादन: 77 गुना वृद्धि।
भारत अब कृषि का शुद्ध निर्यातक है, जबकि अमेरिका और चीन शुद्ध आयातक बने हुए हैं।
विज्ञान, प्रौद्योगिकी और डिजिटल भारत:
- अंतरिक्ष मिशन: मंगलयान से लेकर चंद्रयान की चंद्रमा के दक्षिणी ध्रुव पर ऐतिहासिक लैंडिंग तक, भारत ने अंतरिक्ष विज्ञान में वैश्विक पहचान बनाई।
- डिजिटल क्रांति: यूपीआई (UPI) हर महीने 10+ अरब लेन-देन कर रहा है, जिसने पूरी दुनिया में फिनटेक को प्रेरित किया।
- वैश्विक नेतृत्व: सुंदर पिचाई, सत्य नडेला, इंद्रा नूयी जैसे भारतीय मूल के नेता दुनिया की सबसे बड़ी कंपनियों का नेतृत्व कर रहे हैं।
लाल बहादुर शास्त्री का नारा “जय जवान, जय किसान”, वाजपेयी द्वारा जोड़ा गया “जय विज्ञान”, और मोदी द्वारा दिया गया “जय अनुसंधान” दर्शाता है कि भारत की प्रगति विज्ञान और तकनीक में निहित है।
शेष चुनौतियाँ:
हालांकि भारत ने खाद्य सुरक्षा प्राप्त कर ली है, लेकिन पोषण सुरक्षा, विशेषकर पाँच वर्ष से कम उम्र के बच्चों की, अभी भी चुनौती है। इसके समाधान के लिए ज़रूरी है—
- महिलाओं की शिक्षा
- मातृ स्वास्थ्य में सुधार
- स्वच्छता पर बल (भारत का ODF बनना एक बड़ा कदम है)।
सब्सिडी का तार्किकरण:
- खाद्य सब्सिडी: 2.03 लाख करोड़ (2025–26 बजट)।
- उर्वरक सब्सिडी: 1.67 लाख करोड़।
- कुल: 3.71 लाख करोड़।
अध्ययन बताते हैं कि 20–25% सब्सिडी अपने लक्षित लाभार्थियों तक नहीं पहुँचती। अतः अब ज़रूरत है कि सब्सिडी की बजाय कृषि अनुसंधान, मूल्य श्रृंखलाओं और नवाचारों में निवेश किया जाए।
भारत और विश्व:
चीन से तुलना:
- चीन की प्रति व्यक्ति आय (2025): $13,690 (PPP $28,980)।
- भारत की प्रति व्यक्ति आय (2025): $2,880 (PPP $12,130)।
- भारत पाकिस्तान और बांग्लादेश से आगे है, लेकिन चीन से बहुत पीछे।
- फिर भी, लोकतंत्र भारत की दिशा-सूचक शक्ति (compass) है, जो इसे अपने पड़ोसियों से अलग करता है।
आगे की राह: विकसित भारत @ 2047
2047 तक विकसित भारत का सपना पूरा करने के लिए ज़रूरी है कि—
- समावेशी विकास को गति दी जाए।
- नौकरशाही बाधाओं को कम किया जाए।
- वैज्ञानिक संस्कृति को अपनाया जाए।
- आर्थिक विकास और पर्यावरणीय स्थिरता में संतुलन रखा जाए।
