Giant Iceberg A68a
Why in News?
Recently, scientists have seen a huge iceberg named ‘A68a‘ moving towards South Georgia.
According to scientists, this massive iceberg can split off the far South Atlantic island and hit the British occupied island of South Georgia.
Important facts related to A68a:
This area is called “Cemetery of the icebergs“.
According to an estimate the weight of this iceberg is one trillion tons and it is just 200 meters deep.
It is 158 kilometers long and 48 kilometers
The size of this giant iceberg is like a fist.
Because of this, the risk of hitting the ground is much higher than that of other giant icebergs.
It is filled with dust and sediment. Its melting can increase the fertilizer capacity of the ocean.
Since this iceberg is still floating in water, it will be accompanied by a lot of iron.
This will increase the fertile potential of the ocean and will allow many micro-organisms to flourish.
Geologist Tarling, a biologist at the British Antarctic Survey, warned that the cold and fresh water from the iceberg would threaten the survival of organisms living at the bottom of the food chain, such as mosses (microalgae) and plankton.
This will affect other organisms that depend on these organisms for food.
Eventually populations of animals such as penguins and seal fishes will be endangered.
