Second Generation (2G) differs from 1st generation ethanol in terms of feedstock and subsequently, the production process.
Second Generation (2G) feed stocks include agri-residues like rice & wheat straw, cane trash, corn cobs & stover, cotton stalk, Empty Fruit bunches (EFB), etc.
First–generation bio ethanol is produced by fermenting plant-derived sugars to ethanol using food and fodder crops, such as sugar cane, corn, wheat, and sugar beet.
National Policy of Biofuel 2018 has the objective of reaching 20% ethanol-blending and 5% biodiesel-blending by the year 2030.
The Government has reduced GST on ethanol for blending in fuel from 18% to 5%.
Eco-Sensitive Zones are defined as those areas ‘that are ecologically and economically important, but vulnerable even to mild disturbances, and hence demand careful management’.
They are areas notified by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC).
They are normally areas around Protected Areas, National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries to create some kind of “shock absorbers” to the protected areas.
These areas are biologically and ecologically ‘rich’, ‘valuable’ and or ‘unique’, and are largely irreplaceable if destroyed.
They also act as a transition zone from areas of high protection to areas involving lesser protection.
The basic aim is to regulate certain activities around National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries so as to minimize the negative impacts of such activities on the fragile ecosystem encompassing the protected areas.
