Cycle 4 change Challenge
Why in News?
The Vice President of India, Shri M Venkaiah Naidu has recently called for promoting cycling culture and creating exclusive cycling tracks in cities.
Benefits of cycling:
He observed that cycling is a healthy, low-cost exercise and provides several benefits, including zero pollution.
Cycling is one of the best ways to reduce the risk associated with a sedentary lifestyle.
The cycling provides several benefits in the form of zero dependence on energy sources, zero pollution, and improved health.
It reduces noise pollution, improves road safety and also helps in addressing the increasing energy import bill.
The use of bicycles in place of two-and four-wheelers for short-distance trips in India could result in an annual benefit of USD 24.3 billion.
About the Cycles 4 Change Challenge:
It is an initiative of the Smart Cities Mission, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, in partnership with Fit India Mission and Swachh Bharat Mission has been launched to inspire and support Indian cities to quickly implement cycling-friendly initiatives.
The purpose of this challenge is to help cities engage with their common citizens and experts, so as to develop an integrated approach to promote the practice of cycling.
Under this challenge, cities will be encouraged to implement their plans by collaborating with civil society organizations (CSOs), experts and volunteers.
Significantly, under this initiative, the cooperation of common citizens can play an important role in evaluating the proposal submitted by the cities.
The implementation of this challenge will be mainly in two phases.
The first phase of the challenge will be implemented by October 2020, in which all cities will focus on accelerated intervention to promote the practice of cycling and to formulate necessary strategies in this regard.
